Islam Makhachev wins record 17th straight fight at UFC 330

2 min read

Islam Makhachev cemented his place among the all time greats on Saturday night in Philadelphia, securing a record breaking 17th consecutive victory at UFC 330. In a grueling main event that showcased both technical precision and raw power, the Russian champion defended his welterweight title against Ireland’s Ian Machado Garry. By claiming a unanimous decision victory with scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47, Makhachev officially surpassed the legendary winning streak of Hall of Famer Anderson Silva, whose mark of 16 straight wins had stood since 2013.

Throughout the twenty five minute contest, Makhachev remained firmly in control of the tempo. He utilized a stifling combination of chain wrestling and oppressive top control to neutralize Garry, while simultaneously proving he is more than just a grappler by landing several heavy strikes, including a particularly damaging head kick in the second round. While Machado Garry showed incredible resilience and defensive skill to avoid being finished on the mat, he struggled to create any significant offense that could shift the momentum in his favor. Following the decision, Garry offered high praise for the champion, stating he had no excuses for the loss.

The evening provided another successful title defense in its co-main event as Mackenzie Dern retained her women’s strawweight belt. Facing off against Canada’s Gillian Robertson, Dern leaned heavily into her elite Brazilian jiujitsu roots to dominate the grappling exchanges over five rounds. Although she narrowly missed a buzzer beating rear naked choke in the first frame and failed to find a late finish as promised earlier in the week, Dern secured a clear unanimous decision victory through sheer persistence and positional dominance.

As the dust settles on an eventful weekend in Pennsylvania, the UFC now shifts its focus toward Sacramento for next Saturday’s Fight Night. Fans can look forward to a middleweight clash between local favorite Anthony Hernandez and Brazil’s Gregory Rodrigues to lead a thirteen fight card on the West Coast. For now however, the sporting world remains focused on Makhachev’s historic ascent as he continues to redefine what is possible within the Octagon.
