Apple has a huge product roadmap for the smart home: Here’s what’s coming

2 min read

For several years, Apple’s presence in the smart home market has felt stagnant, with core devices like the HomePod mini and Apple TV remaining largely unchanged for half a decade. Insiders suggest that the delay was primarily due to the limitations of Siri, but with the arrival of generative AI, the company is finally ready to unleash a massive wave of new hardware. The immediate future looks promising, as updated versions of both the HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K are expected to debut as early as this fall. While these updates appear modest on paper, featuring chip upgrades to the S9 and A17 Pro respectively, they serve a critical purpose by providing the local processing power necessary to run Apple Intelligence features.

Looking slightly further ahead, Apple is preparing to enter the smart display arena with a dedicated home hub likely arriving between October and early next year. Internally referred to under a new operating system called homeOS, this device will reportedly feature a seven inch square display powered by an A18 chip. Depending on the model chosen, users might opt for a wall mounted screen or a hybrid version paired with a speaker base similar to the Google Nest Hub. This center piece is designed to handle everything from FaceTime calls to comprehensive smart home management through an evolved Siri interface.

The long term vision for Apple’s domestic ecosystem goes far beyond mere speakers and screens. By late 2026 or early 2027, the tech giant plans to pivot from being just a software provider to producing its own physical security hardware, including its first proprietary security cameras and smart doorbells. Perhaps most ambitious of all is a rumored high end iteration of their smart display that includes a nine inch screen integrated with a robotic arm. Described essentially as a tabletop robot, this futuristic addition suggests that Apple intends to move away from passive assistants toward active robotics within the modern household.
