NATO fighter jet shoots down drone breaching Romania’s airspace

2 min read

A Spanish fighter jet operating on a NATO air policing mission intercepted and shot down an unidentified drone in Romanian airspace on Sunday. According to the Defense Ministry in Bucharest, radar systems first detected the aircraft entering the country from neighboring Moldova before it was engaged by a pilot flying an F-18. Debris from the downed craft reportedly landed in an uninhabited zone located between two small villages.

This incident marks the fourth time a drone has been shot down over Romania this year, signaling a persistent challenge for border security along the eastern flank of the alliance. While officials did not immediately identify the origin of this specific drone, it follows a pattern of increased tension in the region. Back in July, Romanian F-16s took similar action against three Russian drones, marking the first time the nation had actively shot down intruders following dozens of reported incursions since Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine began over four years ago.

The breach comes amid a massive escalation in aerial warfare across Eastern Europe. At the same time Romanian jets were patrolling their borders, Russia claimed to have intercepted more than 800 Ukrainian drones in what appears to be one of Kiev’s largest coordinated strikes since the start of the year. These attacks targeted seventeen different Russian regions, focusing heavily on military warehouses and industrial sites, including those used by Wildberries, Russia’s primary e-commerce giant.

As these long range drone campaigns intensify, President Volodymyr Zelensky is urging Western allies to accelerate the delivery of missile interceptors. He noted that while European stockpiles exist, they cannot remain in storage while Russian missiles continue to strike cities like Kyiv and Kryvyi Rih. With both sides expanding their reach through unmanned aircraft, NATO nations like Romania find themselves increasingly on high alert to prevent conflict from spilling further into sovereign allied territory.
